Gutters are a roofing problem more than a landscaping one. When a gutter blocks, water backs up over the edge of the roof and sits against the drip edge and the first course of shingles, which is the one place a roof is least able to handle standing water. It rots fascia, it soaks the ends of the rafters, and it works its way under the shingles from below.
The second consequence is under the house. North Texas clay swells when it takes on water and shrinks when it dries, and a downspout dumping directly at the foundation on one corner is a very effective way to make one corner of a house move differently from the rest. Extending downspouts away from the wall is one of the cheapest things anyone can do for a Dallas foundation.
